What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty or nasal reconstructive surgery is an artistic surgical procedure performed on the nose. With rhinoplasty any defects or malformations of the nose can be corrected in order to improve breathing; as well as many features of the nose can be reshaped to make it look more aesthetically pleasing.

Nose jobs are one of the most popular plastic surgeries as they can help to change the size of the nose, eliminate the septum deviations, lift the tip of the nose, narrow the nostrils and so much more.

It is very common for patients to be self-conscious about the size and shape of their nose as it has a big impact on how the face looks. Sometimes the unwanted shape comes from genetics or an accident such as a broken nose. Regardless of the reasons, the reshaping of the nose through rhinoplasty aims to get a more harmonious structure for the face, which helps to improve self-confidence. The features of a nose that can be altered with rhinoplasty includes the tip, the length, the bridge, the nostrils, the width and the angle between the nose and the upper lip. However, a nose job is not always to improve facial features. With rhinoplasty, one can permanently correct the defects that cause difficulties in breathing, such as opening the respiratory passages.

How is a nose job performed?

Before the surgery, it is crucial to have good communication between the patient and the doctor. The patient should tell the doctor how he/she wants the nose to look like and the doctor will examine the nose and face to explain the possible outcomes. The shape of the face, the thickness of the skin, age, the structure of the nasal bones and cartilage all play a role in this discussion.

Nose surgeries are generally performed under anaesthesia and last about one or two hours. There are two types of nose surgeries, open and closed. Mostly, a closed surgery is preferred to prevent any visible scars however some cases may be more suitable for an open surgery, which might leave a small scar on the nasal base.

The process of the reshaping of the nose depends on the technique chosen by the surgeon. After the reshaping, the skin is conformed to the newly created nose roof. A splint will be inserted to protect the new shape. Also, buffers or soft plastic tools may be placed in the nose to fix the septum.

Who can have rhinoplastic surgery?

The age limit for rhinoplasty is 17 for women and 18 for men. There is no upper age limit.

If there is a serious nasal problem with a child and if that problem affects their development, a surgical procedure might be performed at an earlier age.

Post Operation Information

Post-surgery, the patient’s face will be swollen for a certain amount of time. Breathing might be more difficult than usual in the first night, but once the swelling goes back and the intranasal dressings are removed, breathing is not obstructed anymore. To reduce swelling and bruises, cold compresses can be used in the first hours after the surgery. The normally occurring pain is relieved with analgesics.

It is recommended that patients stay for at least the first night under supervision in the hospital. This also allows for the first postoperative check-up and further monitoring. Either way, the patient should stay in bed with their head up and avoid any activities that can raise the blood pressure.

After a few days to a week of rest, patients can return to their normal daytime activities like school or work; sports activities should not be resumed before 2-3 weeks post surgery to allow substantial healing.

A few weeks post-operation, the bruising and swelling disappear and patients can fully enjoy the outcome of the surgery.

Some hospitals also offer extended monitoring for the first week with several additional check-ups.

The facilities are really good in a private hospital and they do all the pre general anaesthetic tests and have good recovery nurses etc. I had my nose job around 10 weeks ago now. It’s early days still but so far I am happy with the result.I am so confident with my new nose. Best decision I’ve ever made. Highly recommended.

Words fall short of what my surgeon has done for me! After the first consultation, I left any doubts or fears behind me. My recovery was almost pain-free, and from post-op day 8, I was feeling myself again. I like the result a lot. I completely trust HealiumHealth and its doctors and can recommend them at any time.
