Why Breast Surgery?
The female breast is one of the most prominent features in female anatomy and a symbol for motherhood, nurture and being female. Due to a variety of reasons, breasts might not have the desired shape or size.
The female breast can be too big or small and cause physical or psychological issues, there are developmental influences that can result in deformations (like tubular breasts) and also asymmetries, either naturally or due to cancer treatments. Some patients might struggle with deformations of their nipples or sagging of the breast tissue for various reasons (weight loss, weak connective tissue,…).
The male breast can show more explicit growth as well. While this usually regresses after puberty, in some rarer cases, it does not. These patients would be looking for a breast reduction.
Breast Augmentation
In augmentation mammoplasty, silicone implants are used in order to enlarge the breast and to change its shape. Due to advancements in plastic surgery and silicone technology, it is now possible to achieve a more natural appearance and feel than in the past. The surgery is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgeries.
Prior to the surgery, there will be consultations to discuss the desired outcome and different options for the surgery. Based on a variety of factors, there are different shaped and structured implants, different areas from which the surgery can be performed and different areas where the implant can be placed in the body. These decisions will be made with the patient and based on body structure, breast characteristics, desired outcome and the state of the art in medicine and technology.
The breast enlargement surgery is then performed in the operating theatre while the patient is under general anaesthetic and takes about one hour. After the surgery, the patient gets a soft and supportive bra and can be discharged several hours later. While there will be a certain amount of pain for a couple of days after the surgery, mild painkillers will be prescribed and the patient can go on with normal life.
Breast Reduction
A breast reduction or reduction mammoplasty can be required due to aesthetic but also physical reasons. People with a large chest often struggle with pain in their neck and back due to the weight of their breasts. Long term consequences can be as severe as spinal disk herniation and spinal deformation. Physical therapy can help with some of the symptoms, but the cause and the additional stress on the body are still there. In some cases, patients also suffer from fungal infections or rashes under their breasts. In all these cases, a reduction mammoplasty might be a solution to relieve the patients from their suffering.
A breast reduction surgery is performed in the operating theatre and takes around 2.5 – 3 hours while the patient is under general anaesthetic. Post-surgery, the patient gets a soft and supportive bra and can be discharged several hours later.
Breast reduction surgeries should not be performed before the development of the breasts is finished, but in general, it can be done at any age. While breastfeeding is not affected by the size of the breast, a breast reduction surgery can affect it even though it is performed in a way to have minimal effect on the milk channels. If you decide for a reduction mammoplasty after breastfeeding, you should wait for at least 3-6 months to make sure the breast shape is settled.
Breast Lift
A breast lift or mastopexy can fix sagging of breasts due to weak connective tissue, tissue softening due to age or as the result of breastfeeding and pregnancy.
For light cases of sagging and for decreased volume, a breast lift with silicone implants is the preferred procedure. The process is identical to breast enlargement surgery.
For more advanced cases, there is another possible surgical approach in which the breast is reshaped. The nipple is moved up and loose skin is cut and reshaped. This procedure requires more incisions than a breast augmentation but makes it possible to completely reshape the breast to the desired shape and form.
