What is Labiaplasty?

This surgical procedure is performed in women to reshape the vulva’s inner lips, otherwise known as the labia minora. Labiaplasty is a very common procedure that is rising in popularity worldwide. In fact, the 2016 ASPS statistics report revealed a 39% rise in the number of labiaplasties performed annually. While labiaplasty surgery is normally performed for cosmetic reasons, there are certain cases where it is required to reduce pain and discomfort during exercise, sexual intercourse, or other forms of physical activity. Labiaplasty is common when it comes to reshaping elongated labia that get in the way of regular functionality.

Am I a candidate for labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty candidates are those with excess labia minora, the inner vaginal lips. Labiaplasty may be performed for cosmetic reasons, or to solve more functional issues such as pain and discomfort during sexual intercourse, exercise, or riding a bike. Things like itching and irritation can also cause problems that labiaplasty can solve.

What can I expect from labiaplasty surgery?

Your surgery will be performed in our surgeon’s office, in a process that involves “trimming” excess tissue to allow the labia minora’s lips to sit more neatly within the labia majora. Your doctor will perform the surgery via general or local anesthetic, depending on your preferences and the complexity of your surgery. Once the excess skin has been removed, your surgeon will stitch up the treatment area.

What is the healing/recovery process like?

The recovery process following a labiaplasty operation is normally relatively quick and painless, but you will need somebody else to drive you home. The surgeon may prescribe some pain medication for the days following the procedure, but if you’re not experiencing any pain, these may not be necessary. If you do have pain, you can also apply ice to the treated area every hour when you’re awake. Most pain subsides within 3-5 days. Most surgeons do, however, recommend you take a week or so off from work to relax and let the treatment area heal. It’s also advised that you wear loose, comfortable clothing and a pad to absorb any bleeding – which is completely normal. It’s best to avoid wearing tampons during the healing period. After about a month, you should be fine to resume normal physical activity.
