What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic procedure that rids the body of stubborn fat that can’t be tackled through diet and exercise alone. Liposuction is performed by a plastic surgeon, mostly for areas including the thighs, hips, belly, arms, buttons, back, and the face. However, liposuction can also be performed as part of other surgeries, including tummy tucks, breast reductions, and facelifts. There are different types of liposuction available, depending on your needs. We can chat about this in your initial consultation.

How does liposuction work?

Before booking your liposuction surgery, it’s important to have positive but realistic expectations. The procedure does not eliminate cellulite, but rather, fat. The procedure will take place at your doctor’s office, where you are in safe, professional hands. Before the process begins, your doctor will mark the areas to be treated. They may also take photos for before and after comparison purposes. They can then administer the general or local anesthesia, depending on the operation. General means you will be unconscious for the procedure. Local means you will be conscious, but the treatment area will be numb.

Am I a candidate for liposuction?

This depends on a variety of factors. Most liposuction plastic surgeons will request that you:

  • Don’t smoke
  • Have skin that is elastic and firm
  • Are within 30% of your ideal weight
  • Let your doctor know about any allergies pre-operation
  • State any medications you are currently taking (over-the-counter included)

Your doctor may request that you stop taking certain medications a few weeks before the operation, like certain painkillers and blood thinners, as these may affect the surgery.

How long is the liposuction recovery period?

In most cases, you can return home on the same day as the procedure – although we do recommend you have someone else drive you. However, if you’re having more fat removed than normal, you may have to stay in a hospital overnight. The recovery period depends on the type of liposuction surgery you’re having, but regardless, be prepared for some swelling, bruising, and tenderness. This is completely normal and can last for up to a few weeks. Upon your request, your doctor can provide pain management treatment. You may also need to take a short course of antibiotics to prevent infection, and/or wear a compression garment for a month or two to control the swelling. Most people can go back to work just a few days after surgery, returning to normal daily activities within a few weeks.

I was happy with the outcome of my surgery. I was really stressed about having loose skin after the lipo but I didn’t. I never thought I would be able to get around the same as before the weight gain but now I can. I can wear jeans again, comfortably! I love seeing how confident I am now. Outstanding in every way. A very pleasant experience.Loved it better than I expected.
