Non-operative Facelift
There is a variety of different non-operative treatments that can be used to improve facial aesthetics. This paragraph describes the non-operative facelift or scaffolding.
It is usually used for sagging tissues, like the under-eye areas and cheeks. It can also be used for sharpening the contours of the neck and jaw area as well as the eyebrows.
For this treatment, the subcutaneous tissues are scaffolded to counteract gravity. Very small incisions are made in the skin and the tissue is bonded with special threads that create a “scaffolding” for support. The procedure can be performed with local or full anaesthesia and takes between 20 and 45 minutes. The patient can go on with his or her day right after the treatment.
Botox
Botox is the short word for Botulinum Toxin. This toxin, in very small amounts, can be used to reduce wrinkles by relaxing mimic muscles and by that smoothing the skin.
The overuse of certain mimic muscles can cause wrinkles to appear, orthogonal to the muscle movement direction, especially in the upper part of the face (eye contour, forehead, the area between the eyebrows), but also around the nose and mouth area. Treatments with Botulinum Toxin only target a selected few mimic muscles and not all of them.
It is critical for the treatments that dosage and treatment points are chosen correctly in order to allow a natural looking outcome of the procedure.
During treatment with Botox, the skin in the treatment area is locally anaesthetized and the Botulinum Toxin is injected. This takes around 10 minutes. Afterwards, the area is cooled and the patient can resume daily life. The effect shows after a couple of days and the whole effect will be visible after two weeks.
After a certain age or for deeper wrinkles, Botox alone might not be sufficient to achieve the desired outcome. It can then be combined with treatments like scaffolding or fat injections.
PRP Treatment
PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma. This PRP treatment with autologous blood (= own blood) utilizes the processes of wound healing and is used for revitalizing facial areas and counterbalancing ageing effects, for scar treatment, orthopaedic surgery, light wrinkles, hair loss and as part of the preparation for hair transplantations.
PRP is a concentrated blood plasma source and contains different growth factors and other cytokines. Injecting PRP triggers the cellular reaction for wound healing.
During the PRP procedure, a certain amount of blood is taken from the patient. The blood is centrifuged, red blood cells are removed and the PRP is obtained. It can then be used for a variety of applications, like the subcutaneous injection discussed here.
The injections are made under local anaesthesia, so there is minimal pain during and no pain after the procedure. The application takes around 30 minutes and the patient can resume daily life right after the treatment.
The effect is two-fold: A couple of days after the treatment, the skin shows increased moisture and shine that will last for approximately 3 weeks. Meanwhile, PRP also effects the subcutaneous collagen and elastin fibres. This effect lasts longer and you can gain increased effectiveness by consecutive applications. The treatment frequency will be determined by the doctor in accordance with the problems and the desired outcome.
Fibrocell Treatment
Fibrocell treatment utilizes fibroblast cells that are produced from the patient’s own cells and injected into the patient’s skin. It is used for the rejuvenation of skin, hair loss, wrinkles, scars and stretch marks.
Fibroblast cells are the main producers of collagen in the body. Collagen is the main structural protein in connective tissue. A tissue sample is extracted from an area that is not exposed to the sun (eg. from the back of the ears or the armpit). The isolated fibroblast cells are reproduced and then reinjected into the body in several sessions.
The outcome of the treatment is long-lasting and not allergic since own cells are used in the process.
